After suffering a debilitating injury from a herniated disc back in early 2017, Sian was left bed bound and in excruciating pain for months. She recognized that having something to aim for post recovery would keep her mindset positive & strong and she began to read books about rowing across the world’s toughest oceans.

After having to retrain her right leg to be able to walk again, she was back in action and taking the necessary steps to make her ocean rowing dream a reality.

After an extensive amount of research, training and planning the dream edged closer as Sian was selected as part of a team, to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

After a few setbacks due to covid, the dream prevailed and on March 22nd 2021, Sian set off as part of the 12 member crew in their new home, a 39 foot, 3 ton boat named Roxy.

The team adopted a brutal 3 hour shift rotation pattern, 3 hours on, 3 hours off which relentlessly continued for the course of the exhilarating 42 day journey of 3000 miles.

This impressive feat takes extreme resilience, athleticism and an inordinate amount of tenacity. Did I mention Sian is 61 years young!

Sian did suffer from a 2 week bout of seasickness but pushed on regardless. The crew soon became like family, systematically supporting and tolerating each other in Roxy’s minimal space. Row, collapse, row, repeat and so they rigorously continued.

On May 2nd, Sian the rest of crew arrived In Antigua after 42 days of rowing non stop across the Atlantic. A remarkable and incredible achievement.

Furthermore, Sian is 1 of 3 women over the age of 60 to complete the Atlantic crossing and furthermore, 1 of 5 over the age of 60 to have rowed a worldwide ocean. A truly outstanding and phenomenal accomplishment.

We are enraptured that Sian choose to raise money for us and has raised a total of £4287.24 for Plush Bear’s Shelter.

Thank you Sian, for your benevolence, determination and courage.

We are sure that your excellent work will embolden and inspire many people.
